READ I gave my cat away did I do the right thing?

i had this black cat harley since he was 2 weeks old, my boyfriend made me give him away today to his best friend who has a camp ground he said he would take him in no problem, but then he changed his mind and he wants me to take the cat back but i cant. I cant keep this black cat because there is honestly no space for more then 1 or 2 animals., harley cant be let to run free around the house because he does not behave and rips cables and breaks expensive things so most of the time he was kept in a small little room with my other cat Ally and the new puppy i found abandoned which i took in Hershey. I feel heart broken i miss harley deeply but i know he is not living life being locked away in some small room, my bf never lets him out because he makes a mess so it was for the best to give him away, i want him back but i know i would be very selfish. i know even though these people changed their minds they will still keep him, did i do the right thing will he be happier
