"In the affairs of this world, men are saved not by faith but by the want of it"- Benjamin Franklin?

This quote by benjamin franklin from his Poor Richard's Almanack is part of the doents that I have to use to write a paper. Could somebody help me better understand this? Does this quote illustrate ideals of the enlightenment or the great awakening?
