Is there any hope for Ethical Consumerism becoming more widespread and effective?

Is it possible to make people more aware and empowered as consumers, to make ethical choices in their shopping? By ethical, I mean environmentally friendly, cruelty-free, sweatshop-free, fair trade, supporting smaller local businesses, etc.
