Cleaning my kittens face and ears?

My white kitten rolled around in my fireplace and got full of soot. I gave her a bath and got most of her clean but her ears are still dark from the soot. I tried the wipes they sell at pet stores but it doesnt seem to help. She isn't cleaning her ears herself and I have read washing them can be harmful. Any suggestions on her I can get her back to white?
